Back in July of 2000 I was on my way to Los Angeles to prep GOD'S ARMY for its video and DVD release. I was planning, while in L.A., to kill two birds with one stone by starting the casting process on what I thought would be my next movie: a contemporary story about a Mormon TV news reporter.
As I drove through the town of Mapleton, Utah, I glanced out my window and saw the little white gazebo at the center of the park. The view was very cinematic and I started to wonder what kind of film I could make with that gazebo as the centerpiece.
On the long drive to Los Angeles I started to build a story. At first it was a romance, but it quickly became a murder mystery, and by the time I arrived in Victorville, California, the movie had a title: BRIGHAM CITY.
I stopped at a motel, and I started to write. I was so excited about BRIGHAM CITY that I knew it would be my next film.
I
wrote quickly and carefully, and I started to gather my financial partners,
my
cast and my crew. By October of 2000 we were making the movie…right
in the heart
of Mapleton, Utah, around that little white gazebo.
When I decided to put BRIGHAM CITY into production ahead of other projects, I did it for two reasons: because it was the next story I wanted to tell, and, also, I believed it was the next story you wanted to see.
I hope I'm right, and I hope you love BRIGHAM CITY.
I'll be sitting in the audience with you somewhere on April 6. I may in New York or Chicago or Salt Lake. Or maybe even Spanish Fork. But if you don't spot me, then please take a few minutes and visit me here at the website. Let me know what you think of the new movie.
God bless, and I'll see you at the movies,
Richard Dutcher
