Frequently Asked Questions About BRIGHAM CITY
What is this movie about? BRIGHAM CITY is a murder mystery set in a small Mormon town in Utah. The picturesque town of Brigham is shaken to the core when a woman from California is found dead near her car. Suddenly the town's tranquility is gone, and everyone becomes a suspect. The town sheriff, who is also a Mormon bishop (played by Richard Dutcher), must use every resource to find the murderer and keep the town from tearing itself apart. Is this a religious movie? BRIGHAM CITY is a murder mystery where most of the main characters are Mormon. Religion and issues of faith play an important part both in the story and in the lives of the characters. The movie does not try to convert the audience, but it does explore how people of faith deal with a crisis. Who made this movie? Richard Dutcher, the writer / producer / director of the hit independent Mormon film God's Army, is also the writer / producer / director of BRIGHAM CITY. Dutcher reunited with many of the cast and crew from God's Army to make BRIGHAM CITY, including his God's Army co-star Matthew A. Brown, who plays Deputy Terry Woodruff in Brigham City. Where was this movie filmed? BRIGHAM CITY was filmed on location in Mapleton, UT in October 2000. Many of the cast and crew were hired in Utah. What
does the Mormon Church think of this film? As
with all mainstream entertainment, the Mormon Church has released no
official endorsement of this film, and it is not anticipated that it
will. How much did this movie cost to make? BRIGHAM CITY has a production, marketing and distribution budget of slightly under $1 million. That's about three times the amount Dutcher spent in producing God's Army. Is the cast really Mormon? In BRIGHAM CITY, a majority of the cast is Mormon and live in Utah. That was not the case with God's Army, where a majority of the cast was non-Mormon and based in Los Angeles. God's Army just came out on video less than six months ago. How did Richard Dutcher make another movie so quickly? Dutcher was actually working on a different script idea during the summer of 2000, while God's Army was still playing in theaters. In late summer he was driving to Los Angeles to do some work on the video release of God's Army when he noticed a white pavilion in the middle of Mapleton town park. The pavilion struck him as a great centerpiece for a story about a small town. Dutcher came up with most of the story for BRIGHAM CITY as he drove to Los Angeles and immediately began writing the script. By early fall the film was written, cast, and most of the funds had been raised. Dutcher began filming in October and finished filming during the first week of November. Richard was able to make BRIGHAM CITY so quickly because he was working as an independent filmmaker, and he had proven his success with God's Army. Where will this movie play? BRIGHAM CITY will open in select cities across the United States on April 6, 2001. For details about where the movie will open, go to the film's web site www.brighamcitythemovie.com Is this a family film? This movie lacks any gratuitous profanity, sex, or violence. While the film does deal with some intense subject matter (i.e. murder) it portrays those subjects tastefully and with restraint. Parents may want to exercise caution when considering whether or not to bring very young children to see this movie. Why the title BRIGHAM CITY? The
fictional town portrayed in the movie is called Brigham, a name that
people immediately associate with Mormon stories and people. Also, one
of the main themes of the film is how the entire community deals with
the murder that has occurred, and so it was fitting that the title of
the film reflect the entire community. This movie is in no way related
to or about the actual town of BRIGHAM CITY, located in Northern
Utah. |
